LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — Regional agricultural authorities are mobilizing a P3.3-billion support program to shield Bicol's farming and fishing communities from the projected El Niño impact in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The Department of Agriculture Bicol disclosed that the intervention package encompasses crop insurance coverage, irrigation development, seeds, and farm machinery assistance. According to DA Bicol information officer Lovella Guarin, the broad-based initiative aims to mitigate potential agricultural losses and ensure food security across the region during the expected dry period.
The proactive measure reflects growing concerns about El Niño's impact on agricultural productivity in Bicol, historically one of the country's key farming regions. The assistance package targets both crop and livestock farmers as well as fishing communities dependent on seasonal conditions.
Authorities emphasized that the program represents a coordinated effort to strengthen the resilience of Bicol's agricultural sector ahead of the anticipated weather pattern shift, combining financial support with resource-based interventions to sustain rural livelihoods.
