Bihar has achieved a substantial milestone in its affordable housing programme, completing construction of more than 43 lakh pucca houses for economically disadvantaged families under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
According to official data, the State has channelled over ₹56,743.40 crore into the scheme, making it a key component of the government's rural housing initiative. The investment has resulted in providing permanent, solid-structure homes to vulnerable populations across Bihar's villages and rural areas.
The pace of construction accelerated notably during the financial years 2016-17 through 2021-22, during which 36.63 lakh pucca houses were completed. This five-year stretch demonstrated rapid scaling of the programme, indicating improved implementation and resource mobilization at the State level.
The PMAY-G scheme, launched nationally to provide housing assistance to Below Poverty Line (BPL) and economically weaker section (EWS) households in rural areas, has emerged as one of the largest housing programmes globally. Bihar's performance reflects a significant contribution to reducing the housing deficit among India's poorest populations.
