Bihar flood crisis deepens as 4.6 million people affected across 15 districts

The flood situation in Bihar has deteriorated significantly, with the Disaster Management Department reporting that 46.88 lakh people across 561 gram panchayats in 88 blocks spanning 15 districts are affected by the deluge. Water levels continue to flow above the danger mark at numerous locations, hampering relief and rescue operations across the state.

The incessant downpour across Bihar, combined with heavy rainfall in Nepal's catchment areas, has triggered widespread river and stream overflows. The worst-hit districts include Bhagalpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Begusarai, Katihar, Purnea and Buxar, where entire villages have been submerged and communities cut off from essential supplies and services.

The fifteen affected districts are Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura and Araria. According to the Bihar Meteorological Service Centre, the state has recorded 90 millimetres of rainfall in September alone, representing a 20 percent increase over normal seasonal levels. Authorities are on high alert as meteorological warnings suggest further precipitation in the coming days could worsen the crisis.
