Bihar government outlines subsidy model targeting poor and farming communities

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Wednesday presented his government's subsidy framework aimed at supporting low-income households and farmers, asserting that the state leads the nation in welfare disbursements.
Addressing the Panchayat Aajtak forum's session on NDA governance and Bihar's prosperity, Chaudhary detailed the state's commitment to subsidized essential services. The electricity sector alone receives Rs 23,000 crore in annual subsidies, with approximately 1.92 crore families receiving 125 units of free power monthly. Farmers benefit from a preferential tariff of 55 paise per unit.
The chief minister noted that Bihar's overall state budget has grown to Rs 3.17 lakh crore, reflecting increased allocations for welfare programmes. The subsidies, he suggested, form a cornerstone of the government's poverty alleviation and agricultural support strategy.
The announcements come as Bihar continues efforts to address rural challenges and agricultural sustainability through targeted financial interventions, with electricity subsidies representing one of the state's most significant fiscal commitments.
