Bihar govt tells Supreme Court firearm used during NEET protests

The Bihar government has disclosed to the Supreme Court that firearms were deployed during recent protests relating to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). According to the government's submission, four rounds were discharged into the air by a police constable who had become trapped within the protesting crowd.

The constable, separated from his unit during crowd management operations, fired the shots from an AK-47 rifle. The government stated that no persons were injured as a result of the firing, and the rounds were discharged solely as a means to create distance between the officer and the crowd.

The disclosure comes as the Supreme Court examines the law enforcement response to the NEET-related demonstrations. The incident highlights the challenges faced by security personnel when deployed to manage large gatherings, particularly when units become fragmented during crowd control operations.

The Bihar administration's submission to the apex court provides details of the security measures undertaken during the protests, as judicial scrutiny continues into the handling of the demonstrations and the appropriateness of the force deployed.
