Bihar grapples with firecracker deaths, illegal trade surge during Diwali

Bihar has recorded multiple deaths during the Diwali season as the state contends with a persistent problem of illegal firecracker manufacturing and distribution. Preliminary investigations suggest that at least five fatalities were linked to incidents involving explosives and fireworks, underscoring the dangers posed by unregulated pyrotechnic materials circulating in the market.

The surge in illicit firecracker trade has complicated authorities' efforts to enforce safety regulations during the festive period. Illegal manufacturing units operating in unregistered locations pose significant risks to both workers and consumers, with inadequate safety protocols frequently leading to accidents and injuries.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified operations to curtail the underground firecracker trade, conducting raids on suspected manufacturing sites and distribution networks. However, the clandestine nature of these operations has made enforcement challenging, with vendors quickly relocating operations or shifting stock to evade detection.

The incidents have renewed focus on the need for stricter implementation of existing firecracker regulations in the state. Authorities have urged residents to purchase only licensed fireworks from authorized retailers and to exercise caution during celebrations to prevent further tragedies.
