An on-the-ground assessment of government educational institutions across multiple districts in Bihar has uncovered alarming infrastructure deficiencies that underscore the state's reliance on makeshift solutions to manage its school system. The investigation, spanning five districts, documents a pattern of physical deterioration ranging from collapsing pillars and peeling plaster to severely compromised classroom structures.
In several schools visited, students are compelled to attend classes in temporary structures, open verandas, and tin-sheet enclosures due to unsafe building conditions. The deteriorating physical infrastructure has forced educational institutions to adapt by utilizing unconventional learning spaces, raising concerns about the impact on educational quality and student safety.
The structural issues identified include compromised load-bearing elements, inadequate maintenance of roofing systems, and inadequate classroom spaces. Schools across the surveyed districts reported operating with limited resources and minimal infrastructure development, suggesting a systemic resource constraint at both district and state administrative levels.
The investigation was prompted following the death of a young student at a school in Khagaria, which drew attention to safety concerns within Bihar's government school system. Education administrators have not yet responded with comprehensive remediation plans to address the documented infrastructure failures across the state's educational network.
