Bihar is set to construct more than 11.18 lakh permanent houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), a central government housing initiative aimed at providing affordable shelter to rural households. The ambitious housing programme reflects ongoing efforts to address the state's housing deficit and improve living conditions in rural areas.
In a significant milestone for the scheme's implementation, the state completed the 'Grih Pravesh' ceremony during the 2026-27 financial year, marking the formal handover of completed housing units. The ceremony saw house keys distributed to 2.35 lakh beneficiaries who had been selected under the scheme, enabling them to occupy their newly constructed homes.
Simultaneously, sanction letters were handed over to newly selected beneficiaries, signalling the commencement of the next phase of construction. The dual distribution process reflects the scheme's rolling implementation model, ensuring continuous progress in addressing housing requirements across the state's rural population.
The PMAY-G, a flagship programme of the central government, provides financial assistance to eligible households for constructing basic pucca houses with essential amenities in rural areas. Bihar's substantial allocation under the scheme underscores the state's position as a key focus area for the initiative, with the projected 11.18 lakh homes representing a substantial investment in rural housing infrastructure.
