The Sahugadh panchayat in Madhepura district has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related offences, imposing a 25,000 rupee fine on anyone found consuming or selling narcotics within the village. The decision was reached during a gram sabha meeting where residents unanimously resolved to combat substance abuse through community-led initiatives and strict enforcement.
Under the panchayat's resolution, individuals caught violating the anti-drug ordinance will face the substantial fine in addition to being reported to local authorities. The village council has made it clear that all cases will be escalated to the police and administration for further legal action and prosecution.
In a significant measure aimed at strengthening social deterrence, the panchayat has also declared that families of offenders who face imprisonment will receive no community support for bail proceedings. This provision is intended to place additional social pressure on households to prevent their members from engaging in drug-related activities.
The collective decision reflects growing frustration among villagers over substance abuse and its impact on the community. Officials said similar initiatives are being considered by other panchayats in the region as part of a broader push to address drug trafficking and consumption in rural Bihar.
