India has brought together home ministers from the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to forge a common strategy against transnational threats. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the first such ministerial conclave, providing a platform for member nations to align their security priorities and operational frameworks.
The ministers deliberated on three critical areas of concern for the region: terrorism, drug trafficking, and money laundering. These interconnected challenges have increasingly threatened stability across South and Southeast Asia, prompting the need for synchronized regional responses. By establishing coordinated measures, the member states aim to disrupt criminal networks and terror financing mechanisms that operate across borders.
The meeting underscores BIMSTEC's growing focus on security cooperation alongside its traditional development agenda. By bringing law enforcement and home ministry leadership face-to-face, the initiative seeks to build institutional frameworks for intelligence sharing and joint operations. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to set the foundation for regular ministerial engagements and working groups dedicated to counter-terrorism and anti-trafficking efforts.
BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The organization has been gradually expanding its mandate beyond trade and economic cooperation to address shared security vulnerabilities. Officials indicated that the measures approved will be implemented through enhanced bilateral and multilateral channels among member states.
