Biocon profit plummets 52% in Q2 as shipment delays crimp earnings

Biocon reported a sharp contraction in profitability for the quarter ending September, with net profit tumbling 52 per cent year-on-year to ₹41 crore. The biotechnology company attributed the earnings decline primarily to shipment delays worth approximately $20 million, which squeezed operational margins during the period.

Revenue growth remained subdued, rising just 2 per cent to ₹4,389 crore in the quarter, signalling underlying challenges in the company's core business segments. The combination of modest top-line expansion and margin pressures from logistics disruptions created a difficult earnings environment for India's leading biopharmaceutical manufacturer.

The shipment delays underscore emerging supply chain vulnerabilities affecting the sector, particularly for companies with significant international exposure. Biocon, which derives a substantial portion of revenue from export markets, has increasingly faced logistical constraints that have impacted timely order fulfillment and customer commitments.

The results come as the Indian pharmaceutical sector grapples with elevated input costs and competitive pricing pressures in key markets. Biocon's performance in the quarter reflects broader headwinds affecting mid-tier and larger players in the biopharmaceutical space, which have sought to navigate supply chain normalisation while maintaining growth trajectories.
