BIR examiners accused of ongoing extortion despite audit suspension

MANILA — Corruption within the Bureau of Internal Revenue remains an ongoing concern, according to testimony before the Senate, with field examiners allegedly still engaging in extortion schemes targeting entrepreneurs.

An official of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) presented the allegations to lawmakers on Friday, stating that millions of pesos continue to be extracted from business owners through irregular practices.

The report is particularly concerning given that the BIR implemented a suspension order last year halting all field audits and related operations in an effort to curb misconduct within the agency. The fact that such activities allegedly persist despite this directive raises questions about enforcement and oversight mechanisms within the organization.

The PCCI official's statement underscores longstanding complaints from the business community regarding irregularities in tax administration. Business groups have previously called for stronger measures to eliminate corrupt practices that place additional financial burdens on legitimate entrepreneurs.

The Senate hearing appears aimed at addressing the apparent gap between policy directives and actual field operations, with lawmakers now scrutinizing the effectiveness of previous reform efforts within the BIR.
