BJD joins opposition protest against mass voter deletions

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), one of India's regional political parties, has joined opposition parties in mounting pressure against widespread voter deletions from electoral rolls. Sulata Deo, one of the party's four Rajya Sabha MPs, participated in a march from Parliament House to Akashvani Bhavan, the headquarters of All India Radio, to amplify the opposition's concerns.

The coordinated protest reflects growing alarm among several political parties over the systematic deletion of voters from electoral registers across multiple states. Opposition parties have raised questions about the methodology and transparency of the voter deletion process, contending that eligible voters are being disenfranchised without adequate verification.

The involvement of the BJD, a key player in Odisha politics, marks an expansion of the protest beyond national opposition parties. The march to Akashvani Bhavan was designed to publicize the opposition's grievances and demand a review of the voter deletion procedures followed by election authorities.

Electoral rolls have long been a contentious issue in Indian politics, with periodic claims from opposition parties that deletion exercises are being misused to remove legitimately registered voters. The current protest underscores the continued debate over safeguarding electoral integrity while ensuring that all eligible citizens retain their voting rights.
