BJD opposes plan to privatise Bhubaneswar airport operations

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has challenged a proposal to lease out Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to a private operator, raising questions about the financial implications of privatising the key aviation facility.

According to the BJD's assessment, the airport is valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹7,000 crore, making it a substantial asset. The party emphasised that the facility handles approximately 50 lakh passengers annually, underscoring its strategic importance to Odisha's infrastructure and economy.

The opposition to the privatisation proposal reflects broader concerns about transferring control of critical public infrastructure to private entities. The BJD contended that the airport's revenue-generating potential and passenger base justify retaining government oversight of its operations.

The debate comes as Indian airports across multiple states face discussions over operational models, with authorities weighing the benefits of private sector efficiency against concerns over public interest and long-term asset value. Bhubaneswar airport's significance as a regional aviation hub has intensified scrutiny of any proposed operational changes.
