MANILA — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) granted former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez permission to have his personal staff provide assistance within his cell, according to testimony presented before the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
BJMP personnel disclosed the arrangement during proceedings in the plunder case against Romualdez, which involves allegations of kickbacks from infrastructure projects totaling P7.44 billion. The Third Division is presiding over the high-profile case.
The disclosure of the special accommodations provided to the detained former lawmaker comes as the court continues to examine circumstances surrounding his detention and the handling of his case by correctional authorities.
Romualdez has been among several high-profile political figures prosecuted on graft-related charges in recent years. The case centers on alleged improper financial dealings connected to major public works initiatives.
