BJMP prepares to assume custody of former Speaker Romualdez

MANILA — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to prepare for the assumption of custody over former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez, according to officials.

BJMP Jail Superintendent Jayrex Bustinera stated that the bureau is making necessary preparations, including organizing personnel and finalizing operational procedures for the custody transfer.

"We need to prepare our personnel and instructions," Bustinera said in a statement to news organizations.

The coordination between the two law enforcement agencies underscores standard protocols in cases involving high-profile detainees. The BJMP, which oversees the national jail system, typically assumes custody of individuals sentenced to imprisonment terms.

No timeline has been provided for the custody transfer as of press time.
