BJP accuses Congress of hypocrisy over election commission appointment criticism
The BJP has challenged the Congress party's recent criticism of the election commission chief appointment process, arguing that no formal institutional mechanism existed for selecting commissioners during Congress rule. The opposition party has also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his past statements on Hindutva.

The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a sharp counter-attack against the Congress on Wednesday, questioning the opposition party's credibility to critique the appointment procedures for chief election commissioners. BJP spokespersons pointed out that during Congress-led governments at the centre, there was neither a statutory framework nor a dedicated committee governing the selection of election commissioners.
The saffron party's broadside comes as the Congress has increasingly voiced concerns about the transparency and impartiality of the election commission appointment process under the current BJP-led administration. Congress leaders have argued that the process requires greater institutional safeguards and parliamentary oversight.
Beyond the procedural dispute, the BJP also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, citing his previous remarks regarding Hindutva. The party accused Gandhi of making inflammatory statements about Hindu nationalism and questioned the consistency of his political positions.
The clash reflects the intensifying political tensions between India's two major national parties over institutional frameworks and electoral governance. Both sides have framed their positions as defending democratic principles, with the BJP asserting that its government has actually formalized the election commissioner selection process through established conventions, while the Congress maintains that further reforms are necessary to ensure independence.
