BJP ally Paswan signals readiness to contest all UP seats
Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Chirag Paswan has indicated his party could field candidates across all 403 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats if no alliance agreement is reached with the BJP. The statement underscores potential tensions within the NDA partnership ahead of state elections.

Chirag Paswan, whose Lok Janshakta Party is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has signalled the LJP's willingness to contest independently across Uttar Pradesh's entire 403-seat assembly if negotiations on seat-sharing break down. Speaking in Lucknow last month, Paswan suggested the party had already identified priority constituencies it considers strategically important, though he refrained from disclosing specific numbers or seat demands.
The LJP chief's comments reflect the delicate dynamics within the NDA coalition as parties position themselves ahead of crucial state elections. By publicly staking a claim to contest widely, Paswan appears to be strengthening his negotiating position while signalling the LJP's electoral ambitions in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.
Paswan's reluctance to reveal the party's exact seat demands was framed as a fairness consideration toward his alliance partners. The ambiguous positioning—maintaining the alliance while hinting at independent contest capability—is a common negotiating tactic employed by smaller coalition partners seeking better terms.
The statement comes as various NDA constituents continue discussions on seat-sharing arrangements for upcoming elections. For the BJP, managing expectations among multiple alliance partners while maintaining coalition cohesion remains a key political challenge in Uttar Pradesh, where assembly elections hold significant implications for national politics.
