Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday issued a direct challenge to opposition leaders, calling for a special parliamentary session to debate contentious governance issues. Addressing party workers, Shah specifically named Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, inviting them to substantiate their criticism in the legislative chamber.
"The BJP is fully prepared to discuss this in Parliament. We have nothing to hide," Shah stated, according to party sources. He proposed convening a special session to allow both the ruling coalition and opposition to present their positions on the disputed matters before the full legislative body.
The challenge underscores escalating political tensions in Indian politics, with the opposition frequently targeting the government on various policy matters. Shah's offer reflects the BJP's confidence in its position and its willingness to engage opposition parties in formal parliamentary discourse rather than through media channels.
The opposition has yet to respond formally to Shah's challenge. Such parliamentary debates on contentious political issues are not uncommon, though special sessions convened specifically for this purpose remain relatively rare in India's legislative practice.
