The BJP released its list of eight Rajya Sabha candidates from Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, signalling significant changes to the party's upper house representation from the state. The nominations marked a departure from the previous composition, with the saffron party declining to renominate Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and BL Verma, both of whom had been serving in the chamber.
Beyond the two senior ministerial faces, the party also dropped several other sitting Rajya Sabha members from its slate, opting instead for fresh nominations. The reshuffle reflected the BJP's strategy to strengthen its Rajya Sabha bench ahead of the next round of biennial elections.
The new candidate list encompasses greater representation for women, with two female candidates featured among the eight nominees. The selections are expected to be formally endorsed at party meetings before the candidates file their nominations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
The decision to drop sitting members and Union ministers from renomination underscores the BJP's internal review of its legislative strength in Parliament's upper house. Political analysts noted the move aligns with the party's broader efforts to refresh its parliamentary representation across various states.
