BJP fields Hardeep Singh Puri for Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha seat
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll in Madhya Pradesh, scheduled for November 12. The vacancy arose following the resignation of Union Minister L. Murugan from both his cabinet position and parliamentary seat.

The BJP's selection of Puri, a senior party figure with significant experience in national politics, comes as the saffron party seeks to retain the Upper House seat in the Hindi heartland state. Puri's nomination reflects the party's confidence in its organisational strength in Madhya Pradesh, where it maintains a commanding presence in the state assembly.
The bypoll was triggered after L. Murugan stepped down from his ministerial berth and vacated his Rajya Sabha seat, creating the vacancy that will now be filled through the November 12 election. Murugan, a prominent Tamil Nadu-based BJP leader, had represented the state in the Council of Ministers.
Rajya Sabha bypolls are decided by votes cast by members of the state legislative assembly, giving the ruling party at the state level a significant advantage in securing the seat. With the BJP's substantial strength in the Madhya Pradesh assembly, Puri's candidacy is widely expected to succeed in the election.
The nomination underscores the BJP's strategy of deploying experienced national leaders to strengthen its representation in the Upper House, which plays a crucial role in legislative affairs at the national level.
