BJP Leader Annamalai Denies Support for CJP Amid Row

K. Annamalai, a prominent BJP figure in Tamil Nadu, moved to clarify his political position on Tuesday, stating unequivocally that he does not and will not support the CJP (Citizenship Justice Party), amid growing controversy surrounding the organisation's recent demonstrations.

The clarification comes after Annamalai faced scrutiny for his comments criticising central government's response to CJP protests. In his statement, he sought to distinguish between citizens' constitutional right to democratic protest and the necessity of law enforcement action when demonstrations transgress legal boundaries.

"I support legitimate democratic dissent and lawful protest," Annamalai said, emphasising that arrests and police action should follow due process and existing legal frameworks. He simultaneously questioned certain BJP responses to the matter, suggesting the party should uphold consistent principles regarding public order and civil liberties.

Despite his criticism on the handling of the CJP protests, Annamalai reiterated his support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader governance agenda and policy initiatives. Political analysts view his statement as an attempt to navigate between dissenting on specific government actions while maintaining his broader allegiance to the BJP's ideological framework.
