Union Minister Piyush Goyal has launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of resorting to juvenile political behaviour during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Rajesh Kumar's tenure. Speaking amid mounting demonstrations across the country questioning Kumar's impartiality, Goyal sought to shift focus to what he framed as the Congress's own history of political rewards and appointments.
The BJP minister's remarks come as anti-CEC protests continue to gain momentum in various parts of India. Goyal enumerated instances of what he characterised as political patronage, including the appointment of a former election commissioner to a cabinet position and the bestowal of the Padma Bhushan award to another.
Goyal's statement appears designed to deflect criticism by drawing a comparison between alleged Congress practices and current controversies surrounding the election commission's independence. The minister contended that the opposition party's conduct reflected political immaturity rather than principled institutional concern.
The controversy surrounding the Chief Election Commissioner has intensified scrutiny on the autonomy and neutrality of India's electoral machinery, with civil society groups and opposition parties demanding greater transparency in commission operations. The government has defended the CEC's conduct and approach to electoral administration.
