BJP mocks Congress after poor showing in four-state MLC elections

The ruling BJP took to social media on Wednesday to mock the Opposition Congress following disappointing results for the party in four-state MLC elections held on October 23. The jibes, which trended on multiple platforms, centred around the Congress's negligible tally in the contests for 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. BJP supporters shared memes and posts suggesting the party's performance was so poor that it warranted recounting, using colloquial Hindi phrases to amplify the mockery.

The Legislative Council polls are conducted through electoral colleges comprising state assembly members, local government representatives and teachers. These indirect elections typically serve as a barometer of political sentiment ahead of major state and national elections.

The Congress's weak showing in the MLC contests represents a broader challenge for the party as it seeks to rebuild its presence across India's states. The party has faced sustained electoral headwinds in recent years, with the BJP consolidating its dominance in multiple regions.
