A BJP Member of Parliament has accepted a swimming challenge in the Yamuna River, following claims that pollution in the Delhi waterway has substantially decreased. The lawmaker made the assertion after taking a dip in the river, stating that contamination levels have been cut by half within a year.
Central Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the claims by challenging the MP to demonstrate his confidence by swimming in the river. The parliamentary representative has since accepted the wager, signalling willingness to undertake the feat.
The challenge has reignited discussion about the Yamuna's environmental conditions and ongoing cleanup efforts. Delhi's efforts to rehabilitate the historically polluted river have been a priority for both state and central authorities over several years.
The swimming challenge comes as part of broader claims by ruling party officials regarding improvements to the river's water quality. However, environmental groups and independent assessments have previously raised concerns about pollution levels in the Yamuna, which receives significant industrial and municipal waste discharge along its course through the capital.
