BJP picks Devasish Sharma for Nagaon bypoll as Congress files complaint

The BJP announced Devasish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming Nagaon constituency bypoll in Assam, intensifying the political contest in the northeastern state. Sharma's candidacy has, however, become the subject of regulatory examination after the Congress party filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India.

According to the complaint, Sharma opted for voluntary retirement and subsequently joined the BJP within less than a week of his exit from his previous position. The rapid shift has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his departure and immediate political alignment, prompting the electoral authority to register the complaint for investigation.

Nagaon, located in central Assam, represents a significant political battleground in the state. The byelection was necessitated following developments in the constituency, and both major political parties have fielded candidates to contest the seat.

The Election Commission's examination of the Congress complaint will determine whether any electoral regulations or procedural guidelines were violated in the process of Sharma's nomination.
