BJP promises Uniform Civil Code in UP if re-elected: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated the BJP's commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code in Uttar Pradesh, should the party return to power in the state elections. The announcement underscores the saffron party's push on one of its longstanding ideological priorities, particularly in India's most populous state.

Addressing a campaign event, Shah targeted opposition Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, predicting his party would be unable to form a government in Uttar Pradesh for the next three decades. The combative assertion reflects the high-stakes political contest between the two parties in a state that has traditionally been a battleground in national politics.

The Uniform Civil Code, which would replace personal laws based on religion with a common set of civil laws, has been a contentious issue in Indian politics. Proponents argue it would ensure equality before law, while critics contend it could undermine religious autonomy and minority rights. The BJP has made implementation of the code a cornerstone of its governance agenda in several states.

Uttar Pradesh, with its significant Muslim and other minority populations, has historically seen intense political competition over communal and constitutional issues. Shah's promise to implement the code represents a clear signal of the BJP's ideological direction should it retain power in the state.
