The BJP has called on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to back the implementation of women's reservations in legislatures while also endorsing the complete recitation of Vande Mataram, the nationalist composition with deep historical significance in India's freedom struggle.
BJP leader Smriti Irani made the remarks while addressing the perceived inconsistency in the Congress party's positions. She pointed out that the opening verses of Vande Mataram, which reference Goddess Durga, contain strong religious and cultural symbolism that aligns with the party's stated commitment to inclusive governance.
"Since he has invoked religion, I have a request to that prominent leader of the Congress," Irani said. "The verses of Vande Mataram, some of which were halted at the Congress headquarters, contain a reference to Goddess Durga."
The BJP's comments appear directed at Congress's broader positioning on women's empowerment and national symbols. The exchange highlights the ongoing political debate between the two parties over legislative quotas for women and the place of nationalist hymns in Indian public life.
The women's quota bill has been a major legislative priority, with both parties claiming commitment to advancing women's representation in state assemblies and parliament.
