Blogger ordered to pay RM50,000 damages in MRCB defamation case

Murray Hunter has been ordered by the Shah Alam High Court to pay RM50,000 in damages to MRCB Group Bhd following a defamation dispute. The court additionally awarded RM10,000 in costs to the property development company and granted an injunction against the blogger.

The ruling marks the conclusion of legal proceedings initiated by MRCB against Hunter over articles he had published. The injunction prevents Hunter from making further publications related to the matters covered in the case.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between digital content creators and Malaysian businesses over online commentary. Courts in Malaysia have increasingly been called upon to adjudicate disputes arising from blog posts and online articles.

MRCB, a major property development firm operating in Malaysia, pursued the legal action to protect its reputation and business interests. The court's decision reinforces existing defamation law protections available to corporations facing allegations in online publications.
