BMW has rolled out the i5 long wheelbase electric sedan in the Indian market, priced at Rs 79.60 lakh, as the company expands its electric vehicle portfolio in the country. The vehicle is assembled locally at the BMW Group Plant in Chennai, underscoring the automaker's commitment to domestic manufacturing of premium electric vehicles.

The locally-produced i5 LWB represents a significant milestone for BMW's operations in India, becoming the second electric vehicle to be manufactured at the Chennai facility. The plant previously began production of the iX1, another key model in the company's EV lineup, demonstrating BMW's strategic focus on India's growing premium electric vehicle segment.

The 'First Edition' variant of the i5 LWB has already been fully subscribed, indicating strong market demand for the model among India's affluent consumers. The extended wheelbase variant offers additional interior space and comfort, positioning it as a premium offering in the competitive electric sedan category.

BMW's local assembly of the i5 LWB is expected to improve cost efficiency and reduce delivery timelines compared to imported vehicles. The move aligns with the company's broader strategy to leverage India's manufacturing capabilities while catering to the rising demand for luxury electric vehicles among domestic buyers.
