A catastrophic maritime disaster off Djibouti has claimed the lives of at least 139 migrants, including numerous children, authorities said. The vessel capsized while carrying people attempting to cross dangerous sea routes in search of better opportunities, a perilous journey undertaken by thousands annually across the region.

Recovery efforts have yielded 109 bodies so far, according to official statements. The deceased included 52 men, 42 women, and 15 children—comprising nine girls and six boys. The significant presence of women and children among the victims underscores the humanitarian dimensions of the ongoing migration crisis affecting the Horn of Africa and surrounding regions.

The incident highlights the extreme risks faced by migrants using informal sea routes across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Overcrowded vessels, inadequate safety equipment, and treacherous maritime conditions have made these passages increasingly deadly. Such tragedies occur with alarming regularity along migration corridors connecting the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Djibouti, positioned at the strategic gateway between Africa and the Middle East, remains a key transit point for migrants and refugees. The nation has faced mounting pressure as displacement crises in neighboring regions drive desperate populations toward distant shores in pursuit of employment and refuge from conflict and poverty.
