Bogambara Prison reopens as correctional facility with 75 transferred inmates

The Justice Ministry has completed the renovation and reopening of Bogambara Prison, marking the return of the historic facility to active service in the country's penal system. Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara issued the gazette notification formally re-establishing the prison as a correctional facility, signalling the government's expansion of institutional capacity.

A total of 75 inmates have been transferred to Bogambara Prison following the completion of renovation works. The prisoners were relocated from the Colombo Remand Prison and Magazine Prison, both of which have faced capacity pressures in recent years. The transfers represent an initial step in redistributing the inmate population across the prison network.

The reopened facility has begun operations with provisions for inmate welfare, including meal services sourced through designated suppliers. Prison authorities have commenced standard correctional procedures at the renovated site to ensure orderly management of the transferred population.

The reopening of Bogambara Prison reflects efforts by the Justice Ministry to address congestion within the penal system and improve overall correctional infrastructure. The facility's return to operational status is expected to ease pressure on existing prisons while providing enhanced accommodation standards for inmates.
