Bollywood eyes saints' stories after spiritual drama box office success

The reported box office success of a recent spiritual drama has prompted Bollywood producers to greenlight a slate of films centred on the lives of India's revered saints and spiritual leaders. Industry sources indicate that at least six projects are now in active development across major production houses.

Among the planned films are two separate productions based on the life of Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet-saint credited with composing the Ramcharitmanas. Additionally, biographical projects focusing on Sai Baba, Sant Ravidas, and Swami Haridas are in various stages of development.

The renewed interest in saint-based narratives reflects audience appetite for stories rooted in India's spiritual and cultural heritage. The success of recent films in this genre has encouraged filmmakers to invest in dramatised accounts of religious and philosophical figures, with production companies viewing such projects as commercially viable alongside their cultural significance.

Producers involved in these projects are reportedly scouting locations and finalising casting choices, with some productions expected to begin filming within the coming months. The slate represents a significant investment in period dramas and spiritual content across the Hindi film industry.
