India's film regulatory body has been reconstituted with a new complement of members drawn from the entertainment industry, film academia, and public interest representation. The Central Board of Film Certification, which oversees the classification and certification of films for theatrical and digital release, now comprises 18 members including acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi and former Bollywood star Preity Zinta.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the composition following standard procedures for periodic renewal of the board's membership. The board's expanded roster aims to bring diverse perspectives to the certification process, balancing industry expertise with broader societal concerns regarding film content standards.
According to official notification, the newly constituted board will remain in effect for a period of three years, or until the ministry issues further orders, whichever occurs earlier. This timeline aligns with the ministry's established practice of periodic review and reconstitution of regulatory bodies overseeing media and entertainment sectors.
The Central Board of Film Certification operates under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and holds responsibility for examining films before their public release, assigning age-appropriate ratings, and addressing concerns regarding offensive content. The board's composition has historically included representatives from film production, distribution, exhibition sectors alongside social workers and government officials.
