Bombay High Court questions NIA over Waze bail plea, scrutinises assets

The Bombay High Court has directed the National Investigation Agency to explain the implications of releasing suspended Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze on bail in connection with an ongoing investigation. During hearing arguments on Waze's bail application, the court sought specific responses from the probe agency on how his release might impact the investigation.

The bench also noted its surprise regarding the assets allegedly accumulated by Waze during his service in the police force. This observation underscored the court's interest in understanding the financial aspects of the case, which forms part of the broader inquiry into the officer's conduct.

Waze has been at the centre of a high-profile investigation following his arrest in connection with the recovery of an explosives-laden vehicle near the residence of businessman Mukesh Ambani in February 2021. The case subsequently expanded into allegations of extortion, illegal activities, and abuse of official position.

The court's probing questions reflect its cautious approach to bail applications in cases involving public officials accused of serious crimes. The NIA, which has taken over investigation of certain aspects of the matter, is expected to submit its detailed response to the court regarding the agency's position on Waze's release and the potential consequences thereof.
