The Bombay High Court has directed the Centre's attention to systemic vulnerabilities in India's identity verification framework, suggesting amendments to the Aadhaar Act could help authorities locate and monitor illegal foreign residents in the country.

In its observations, the court noted critical deficiencies in coordination between agencies responsible for immigration and identity documentation. These lapses have created opportunities for foreign nationals to circumvent verification procedures and obtain Aadhaar cards through fraudulent means, the bench found.

The court's recommendation stems from concerns that the current system lacks sufficient mechanisms to cross-verify information submitted by applicants against immigration records and other government databases. Officials are often unable to distinguish between eligible Indian residents and undocumented foreigners when processing Aadhaar applications.

The High Court suggested that legislative reforms could establish clearer protocols for document authentication and improve information-sharing between the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and relevant immigration authorities. Such coordination could create a more robust system for validating applicant eligibility before Aadhaar issuance.

The matter underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining the integrity of India's largest identity database while ensuring legitimate citizens can access essential services linked to Aadhaar verification.
