Bopanna Excluded from AITA Merit Roster Due to Retirement Rule

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has excluded Rohan Bopanna from its prestigious Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) roster, citing non-compliance with a mandatory retirement criterion that requires honorees to have stepped back from competitive play for a minimum of one year.

Bopanna, who achieved the world No. 1 ranking in men's doubles during his career, does not meet this qualification threshold as he continues to compete on the professional tennis circuit. The AITA's eligibility framework stipulates that athletes must formally retire before becoming eligible for consideration under the SOM category.

The decision underscores the strict adherence to the association's regulatory guidelines, which are designed to recognize players who have concluded their competitive careers. While Bopanna remains an active participant in international tennis tournaments, the one-year cooling-off period effectively bars him from current recognition under this particular honor.

The exclusion raises questions about how athletic bodies balance recognizing ongoing contributions from active players against established protocols governing post-career honors. Bopanna's continued presence in professional tennis has positioned him outside the framework the AITA has established for its SOM designation.
