Border agency secures RM490mil funding boost and 48 new scanners

Malaysia's border agency has been allocated RM490 million in fresh funding to upgrade its operational capacity and modernise screening infrastructure at key entry points across the country.

The investment will enable the acquisition of 48 new scanning devices, significantly expanding the agency's ability to detect contraband, prohibited items, and security threats at borders and airports. The equipment procurement represents a critical component of the broader modernisation programme aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness of border control operations.

As part of enhanced security protocols, mandatory drug and alcohol screening will be implemented for all pilots and flight crew members operating commercial services. The testing requirements aim to strengthen aviation safety standards and ensure compliance with international best practices in crew management.

The funding injection reflects government commitment to strengthening border security infrastructure amid growing concerns about transnational crime and security threats in the region. Officials indicated that the new scanning equipment would be deployed progressively across major entry points to streamline processing procedures while maintaining rigorous security checks.

The modernisation drive is expected to enhance Malaysia's capacity to monitor and intercept illicit goods, strengthen passenger screening protocols, and bolster overall border management efficiency in line with regional security cooperation frameworks.
