Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic Dies While Serving Genocide Sentence

Ratko Mladic, one of the most prominent figures convicted for atrocities committed during the Bosnian War, has died while imprisoned. The former Bosnian Serb Army commander was serving a life sentence imposed by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for his role in orchestrating some of the region's worst massacres and ethnic cleansing campaigns.

Mladic was arrested in 2011 after spending 16 years evading international authorities. He was ultimately convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the Geneva Conventions. His conviction was linked to the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Bosniak Muslims were killed, and the siege of Sarajevo that claimed thousands of civilian lives over three and a half years.

The general's trial was one of the most significant proceedings at the ICTY, reflecting international efforts to hold senior military leaders accountable for mass atrocities. His death concludes a legal case that became symbolic of the tribunal's work in documenting and prosecuting perpetrators of crimes during the 1990s Yugoslav wars that resulted in an estimated 100,000 deaths across the region.

Mladic's capture and conviction were considered crucial steps in the region's post-conflict justice and reconciliation process, though his case remained deeply controversial in Serbia and among some segments of the Bosnian Serb population.
