Bosnian war crimes convict Mladic to be laid to rest in Belgrade

Mladic, who died while imprisoned after being convicted of orchestrating some of the Balkans' worst atrocities during the 1990s conflict in Bosnia, is set to be interred in Belgrade. The burial arrangement marks a final chapter in the case of one of the region's most notorious figures from the post-Cold War period.

The military commander was found guilty of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity stemming from the Bosnian war, during which tens of thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. His conviction by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia represented a significant moment in international justice efforts following the collapse of Yugoslavia.

Mladic's death in late August came after decades of proceedings against him for his alleged role in some of the conflict's most infamous incidents, including the Srebrenica massacre. His case had drawn international attention as courts sought accountability for leaders and commanders held responsible for systematic violence during the 1990s Balkan wars.
