Brazil Fines ByteDance $30 Million Over Illegal Teen Data Processing

Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has imposed a 30 million Brazilian real ($30 million USD) fine on ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, for unlawfully processing data belonging to minors. The regulatory action follows an investigation determining that TikTok processed teenagers' personal information in breach of Brazil's data protection framework.

The ANPD found that ByteDance lacked valid legal grounds to collect and process data from users under 18 years of age on the TikTok platform. The regulator has ordered the company to delete all personal information of teenage users that was collected without appropriate consent or lawful basis.
