Brazil's president has escalated rhetoric ahead of the country's electoral contest, demanding the disqualification of a key rival based on claims that Meta provided preferential treatment through its social media platforms. Lula alleged that the technology company actively promoted content favoring Flávio Bolsonaro while suppressing opposing viewpoints, constituting unlawful interference in the democratic process.
The accusations centre on Meta's operational decisions across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp during the pre-election period. Lula's camp contends that algorithmic promotion and content moderation policies disproportionately benefited Bolsonaro's campaign messaging, effectively tilting the electoral playing field.
Meta has categorically rejected the allegations, stating it applies consistent content policies across all users and candidates without political bias. The company emphasised its commitment to maintaining platform neutrality during electoral periods across all markets where it operates.
The dispute reflects mounting tensions between Brazil's government and major technology firms over their role in elections. The controversy comes amid broader global concerns about social media's influence on democratic processes and whether platforms sufficiently regulate political content.
