Brazil's Lula wins fourth presidential term in closely contested election

President Lula da Silva has been re-elected to a fourth term as Brazil's leader following an extremely competitive electoral battle with senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The result consolidates the leftist leader's political position after narrowly winning the previous election.

Addressing supporters in São Paulo, Lula struck a defiant tone regarding Brazil's international standing, declaring that the nation "will not accept being anyone's backyard." The statement appeared directed at concerns about Brazil's sovereignty and its role on the global stage.

Bolsonaro, the right-wing senator and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has rejected the election outcome. He characterized the result as "inexplicable" and has called for the election to be annulled, signalling potential legal or institutional challenges to Lula's victory.

The closely contested election reflects deep political divisions within Brazil, with the two candidates representing sharply divergent ideological positions. Lula's victory extends his tenure in one of Latin America's largest economies at a time of significant domestic and regional challenges.
