Brazilian man's cross-continent romance ends in AI deception
A 49-year-old Brazilian man has become the latest victim of digital romance fraud after selling his possessions and travelling over 1,900 kilometres to meet an online girlfriend, only to discover she was artificially generated. Edimar Martins exhausted his savings in pursuit of the relationship before receiving help to return home.

Martins embarked on an ambitious journey after developing what he believed was a genuine romantic connection with a woman he met online. The woman he sought to marry was featured on a TikTok account commanding approximately 300,000 followers, lending apparent credibility to their relationship. Unaware of the deception, he liquidated his assets and travelled the vast distance with marriage in mind.
Upon arrival at his destination, Martins discovered the shocking truth: his online companion was not a real person but an AI-generated profile. The revelation left him stranded far from home with depleted financial resources, unable to afford his return journey.
Facing financial hardship in an unfamiliar location, Martins sought assistance from local authorities and charitable organisations. After receiving support to fund his passage back to Brazil, he made the difficult journey home. Despite the traumatic experience, Martins has expressed determination to continue seeking genuine romantic companionship.
The incident highlights growing concerns about artificial intelligence being weaponised for romantic deception and catfishing schemes, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals seeking connection online. Experts have warned that AI-generated profiles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making them difficult for average users to distinguish from authentic accounts.
