Brazilian police shoot man holding partner hostage with fake weapon

Police in Criciuma, a city in Brazil's southernmost state of Santa Catarina, discharged their weapons at a man during a domestic violence intervention on Thursday. The suspect had positioned his partner in front of himself while brandishing what authorities determined to be a non-functional replica gun.

According to police reports, the man had physically assaulted the woman before threatening her with the imitation weapon. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect refused to comply with demands to surrender and maintained his hold on the victim, using her as a protective barrier against law enforcement.

Facing what they assessed as an imminent threat to the hostage's safety, police made the decision to open fire on the suspect. Emergency services transported the man to a nearby medical facility, though details regarding his condition were not immediately disclosed.

The woman was released unharmed following the intervention. Domestic violence remains a significant concern across Brazil, with authorities frequently responding to incidents involving intimate partner abuse and armed threats.
