BRICS Must Move Beyond Anti-Western Stance, Focus on Peace

The BRICS bloc of emerging economies has reached a critical juncture in its evolution, requiring it to transcend its identity as a counter to Western dominance and embrace more constructive global responsibilities. With its expanding membership and growing economic clout, the grouping faces mounting expectations to demonstrate mature leadership on the international stage.

The relationship between India and China will prove pivotal to the bloc's trajectory. As the two largest Asian economies within BRICS, their ability to cooperate on key issues will significantly influence the grouping's cohesion and effectiveness. Recent efforts at accommodation between New Delhi and Beijing signal that pragmatic engagement remains possible despite underlying bilateral tensions.

While the non-Western character of BRICS holds symbolic importance for developing nations, mere opposition to Western-led systems offers insufficient foundation for sustained unity. The grouping's long-term credibility depends on moving beyond reactive positioning and developing substantive positions on global governance.

Crucially, BRICS must balance its focus on economic cooperation and institutional development with a genuine commitment to conflict resolution. Simply stabilising the global economy while standing apart from peacebuilding efforts would undermine its legitimacy as a responsible stakeholder in international affairs. Only by addressing both economic structures and geopolitical tensions can BRICS demonstrate the maturity expected of an influential global bloc.
