BRICS nations strengthen auditing and statistics cooperation framework

BRICS member states have moved to deepen cooperation in financial oversight and statistical governance, with leaders endorsing the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) Work Plan for 2027-2028 at their recent summit. The initiative seeks to strengthen ties among the bloc's national auditors and statistics agencies, reflecting growing emphasis on transparent institutional frameworks within the grouping that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The endorsement of the SAI Work Plan represents a significant step toward harmonising audit standards and practices across BRICS nations. The framework aims to facilitate knowledge-sharing, capacity building and collaborative approaches to government auditing, which member states view as essential infrastructure for economic governance and combating fiscal irregularities.

Leaders have also called for modernisation of official statistical systems across their jurisdictions, recognising the critical role accurate data collection plays in policy formulation and economic planning. The push for upgraded data infrastructure addresses longstanding challenges in comparability and reliability of statistics across diverse BRICS economies.

The cooperation agreements underscore BRICS efforts to build alternative institutional mechanisms outside Western-dominated frameworks. By strengthening domestic oversight bodies and statistics agencies, member nations aim to develop autonomous governance systems while establishing peer mechanisms for verification and accountability within the bloc.
