Parliamentarians from BRICS nations have united behind a call for sweeping reforms to the United Nations Security Council structure, signalling renewed push by the bloc to reshape global governance mechanisms. The joint declaration, adopted at the forum, emphasizes the need to modernize the international body to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities and ensure equitable representation of developing nations.
The declaration represents a consolidated position from legislators across Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa on restructuring the Security Council, which has remained largely unchanged since its establishment in 1945. BRICS members have long argued that current Council composition fails to represent the interests of the Global South and hampers effective international decision-making on critical issues.
In a separate measure, the forum condemned the terror attack that struck Pahalgam in Kashmir, reaffirming the bloc's commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. The attack underscored security challenges in the region and prompted the parliamentarians to emphasize the importance of international cooperation against violent extremism.
The BRICS Parliamentary Forum serves as a platform for legislative dialogue among member nations, complementing official governmental interactions. The adoption of the joint declaration reflects growing consensus among the bloc's lawmakers on prioritizing institutional reforms at the global level while addressing regional security threats.
