Bride walks 8km in wedding finery, pleads for road access

A bride in Dehradun district's Chakrata region became an unlikely advocate for rural infrastructure development after completing an arduous 8-kilometre journey on foot to her wedding ceremony. Sharmila undertook the challenging trek dressed in heavy traditional wedding attire to reach her groom's village in Undawa, a remote settlement plagued by poor road connectivity.

The inaccessibility of the village, located in a difficult terrain, left the bride and wedding party with no option but to complete the journey on foot to meet auspicious timing for the ceremony. The incident underscores the ongoing infrastructure challenges faced by residents of remote Himalayan villages.

During the wedding proceedings, Sharmila appealed directly to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to prioritise road construction in the village. Her plea highlights the struggle faced by residents who contend with limited access to basic services and connectivity, particularly during emergencies and significant life events.

The incident has drawn attention to the need for improved road infrastructure in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand, where numerous villages remain cut off during certain seasons and lack adequate connectivity for essential services.
