The Gateshead scheme uses a six-megawatt heat pump to capture thermal energy from ancient mine water, marking the largest installation of its kind in Great Britain. The system channels heated water through more than five kilometres of underground pipes to supply residential and public properties across the region, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel-based heating methods.

Mine water, which maintains relatively constant temperatures year-round at significant depths, provides a reliable renewable energy source for heating applications. By harnessing this natural thermal resource, the Gateshead system demonstrates how industrial heritage sites can be repurposed to support modern sustainability objectives.

The project has attracted research interest as part of the Gateshead Living Laboratory initiative, which is studying the performance and long-term viability of the mine water heating infrastructure.
